About Saimaa Landscape Protection Area

The Saimaa Landscape Protection Area is located in southeastern Finland within the expansive Saimaa Lake region, the largest lake system in the country and one of the largest in Europe. The area encompasses extensive freshwater islands, rocky shorelines, and dense boreal forests, forming a diverse natural environment shaped by glacial history. The landscape is characterized by a mosaic of coniferous and mixed forests, numerous sheltered bays, and clear waters that provide habitat for rare and endangered species such as the Saimaa ringed seal, one of the only freshwater seal populations in the world. Established to safeguard the ecological character and cultural heritage of the Saimaa region, the protection area also preserves traditional Finnish lake-side lifestyles and fishing practices that have persisted for centuries.

Recreational opportunities in the Saimaa Landscape Protection Area focus largely on outdoor water activities including canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, especially during the warm summer months. The area is crisscrossed by marked hiking trails that allow exploration of its forests, rocky ridges, and peaceful shorelines. Winter transforms the landscape into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Visitors can experience tranquil solitude or explore the quaint lakeside villages dotted throughout the area. The Saimaa ringed seal reserve zones within the protection area demand sensitive visitation and provide critical conservation value. Visitor appeal stems from the region's natural beauty combined with excellent access to wilderness experiences close to urban centers like Lappeenranta and Savonlinna.
